Kimberly Spratt launched her wine brand, Della W Wines, this year with a mission to provide premium wines and to give back to the community in Greater St. Louis. In support of its commitment to give back, the young startup has a goal of raising $10,000 towards breast cancer awareness and research efforts in the black community. To meet that goal, 5% of wine box sales will be donated to breast cancer awareness and research.

“I chose breast cancer to be our first charitable effort because it’s a cause that has not only affected influential women in my life but it also affects women of color disproportionately,” Spratt said.

According to data collected by the American Cancer Society, the number of deaths related to breast cancer has declined over the last 30 years. However, there is still a disparate mortality gap between breast cancer related deaths among African American women and white women. The mortality rate for African American women who have breast cancer is 40% higher than that of white women. Additionally, the mortality rate for African American women under 50 years old is double that of white women under 50.

“I’d like to do my part by using my resources to help organizations that work with women of color who are affected by breast cancer.” - Kimberly Spratt

This year, Della W partnered with Sister Strut, an organization that raises awareness of breast cancer statistics affecting women of color and works with charities and organizations to change them. In September, Della W hosted The Pink Rally Series—a series of events held throughout Greater St. Louis to help people register for the Sister Strut Parade in October. Spratt was pleased with the outcome.

“The parade was the first Saturday in October and it was a big success,” she said. “Della W was able to raise money from selling products and taking a portion of the proceeds to donate to two STL based breast cancer organizations.”

With a portion of the proceeds, the company donated $1,000 each to The Breakfast Club STL and The Pink Angels Foundation—two St. Louis-based organizations committed to breast cancer awareness and support.

“We like the fact that these charities are boots on the ground and they work directly with the community.”

Most of Della W Wines’ charitable efforts will be focused around Breast Cancer Awareness Month. However, the company will also run wine specials throughout the year. This will give customers the opportunity to donate funds or purchase products whose proceeds will go towards another charity or organization who has joined in the fight against breast cancer.

“We’re really proud of what we’ve done so far and we’re looking forward to what we will be able to accomplish in the future.”
